Biodiversity is life
Biodiversity is our life

The United Nations has declared 2010 the International Year of Biodiversity to celebrate life on earth and the value of biodiversity to our lives.

Biodiversity is often understood in terms of the wide variety of plants, animals and microorganisms or the variety of different ecosystems but also includes differences within species. This image has been specially created to emphasize these intra-specific differences.

F.ayakoana 4

The image shows Fritillaria ayakoana from four different locations within a 600 km²  area of Shimane Prefecture, Japan. From left to right: Sada-cho, elevation: 103 m (type locality), Mt. Ooetakayama, elevation: 747 m, Ooshiro, elevation: 421 m and Kawamoto, elevation: 51 m.

Japan is the host country of the tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity.
